The 1959“60 Ohio State men's basketball squad is the only team in school history to win the NCAA National Championship. They were led by Hall of Fame coach Fred Taylor and featured three future Hall of Famers on their roster - center Jerry Lucas forward John Havlicek and reserve forward Bob Knight. Knight entered the Hall for his storied coaching career most notably at Indiana. The Buckeyes steamrolled through the NCAA tournament by an average of 19.5 points a game dusting off California 75-55 in the final with Havlicek and Lucas teaming up for 28 points. Mel Nowell was the starting guard on that championship team. He was named to the NCAA All Tournament Team for his play. He was drafted by the NBA Chicago Zephyrs for 1962-63 and averaged 5.9 PPG over 39 games. Later in 1967-68 he played for the ABA New Jersey Americans and averaged 9.6 PPG over 76 games. These were his only 2 professional seasons. 10k gold Jostens ring features a large red stone at the face encircled by raised lettering of "The Ohio State University 1960. Both sides have intricate graphic designs centering on NCAA Basketball logos. Nowell's initials "M.N." are stamped on the inside of the ring band in cursive letters along with tiny stampings of "Jostens" and "10K" inside the band.
