Offered here is a 1982 Portugal National Team away jersey worn by defender Eurico Gomes in a May 5 friendly against Brazil. After the match, Gomes exchanged shirts with Brazilian center-back Oscar Bernardi and the shirt has been preserved in Oscar's personal collection ever since. Portugal's national team of the early 1980s was building toward its emergence as a major European power, and Gomes was a major part of that, earning 38 caps from 1978-85. On the club side, he starred for famed Portuguese clubs Benfica, Sporting and Porto from 1975-87.
The short-sleeve jersey made by Adidas comes in white cotton/polyester with a red turn-down collar and red Adidas three-stripe detailing along the raglan shoulders. The Adidas Trefoil logo appears on the chest in black alongside the embroidered FPF (Federação Portuguesa de Futebol) national team crest. The shirt exhibits moderate wear with fabric pilling and evidence of repeated match use and laundry cycles.
The Oscar Bernardi Collection
This shirt comes from the personal collection of José Oscar Bernardi, better known as Oscar, who played for the Brazil National Team from 1977 to 1986. Included is a letter of provenance signed by Oscar. Most jerseys in the collection were obtained directly through player swaps after competition. Others were acquired via trade with footballers in Oscar’s wide network of teammates and friends. At age 71, he still resides in Brazil and is ready for his collection to be appreciated by others.
