The 1964 Taça das Nações (Portuguese for "Nations' Cup"), referred to more commonly as the "Little World Cup", was an international tournament played in Brazil to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Brazilian Sports Confederation. From May 30 to June 7, 1964, four of the world’s most prominent national teams – Brazil, Argentina, England and Portugal – played seven matches in a round-robin format at Pacaembu Stadium in São Paulo and the famous Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro. Ultimately, Argentina went on to win the "Little World Cup" trophy, beating the host nation, 3-0, and going undefeated.
Of course, the biggest draw was the great Pelé just entering his prime. The 23-year-old superstar got Brazil off to a dazzling start in the opening May 30 match against England, scoring one of his team’s four second half goals as Seleção hammered the Three Lions, 5-1, in front of 77,000 spectators at the Maracanã. This featued Pelé Brazil jersey was worn in that very match and comes with exceptional provenance from his longtime Brazilian teammate and fellow football legend, Garrincha.
The career accolades of Pelé, born Edson Arantes do Nascimento, are as biblical as the ten commandments for South American football fans. In 1956, he signed his first professional contract with Santos FC at the age of 15. Two years later, he led Brazil to it first World Cup title, scoring twice in the 1958 Final. He remains the only player ever to win three World Cups and retired as Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 77 goals in 91 caps. His record 1,283 career goals for club and country seems untouchable.
The short-sleeved home model shirt displays the classic Canarinho (Little Canary) golden yellow design with a green open collar and green cuffed sleeves. Tagged by São Paulo-based kit maker Athleta, it has an early CBD (Confederação Brasileira de Desportos) crest embroidered on the left chest, with his famous number “10” on the back in green. The shirt displays a solid amount of visible wear throughout and has been autographed by Pelé on the right chest. At some point, the signature was traced over in bold black marker, perhaps to improve its aesthetics. We have no knowledge when this was done.
Authentication & Provenance
Letter from MEARS for the jersey documenting its appropriate size, specs, and wear. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Letter from Garrincha’s daughter specifying the 5/30/1964 match in which it was worn by Pelé.
