The 42nd NBA All-Star Game was best remembered for the return of L.A. Lakers point guard Magic Johnson who retired from the NBA before the start of the 1991-92 season after contracting HIV. In a crowd-pleasing display of basketball skills at the Orlando Arena on February 9 1992 Johnson led the Western Conference team to a convincing 153-113 victory over the East squad. He scored a game-high 25 points and nine assists in 29 minutes of action. To no one’s surprise he was named the game’s MVP.
Exclusively licensed and produced by Steiner Sports as part of their "Autographed Story" campaign this lovely framed and double-matted 16" by 20" color photo shows Johnson holding up his MVP hardware at the conclusion of the game brandishing his trademark Magic smile. To the right Magic has written a long paragraph in bold 9/10 silver Sharpie about his return to basketball following his HIV diagnosis. In part the inscription reads: “The way I played and performed let people know I could still play…He’s OK. Yeah you can still play against him. Nothing’s going to happen. So it did a lot for people dealing not just with H.I.V. but with anything else that they can go on and live their life.” Beneath his closing signature he added “92 ASG MVP.” It was a most memorable night for all in attendance and this is just the perfect piece to capture the moment.
The athletes chosen to write these paragraph-long story inscriptions were limited to just a few editions for each moment/image. Each piece is in their own words and the content changes slightly each time so essentially the 5 or 10 that were done are all unique 1 of 1's.
