This lot features original postcard art depictions of seven 19th Century N173 Dogs Head & Old Judge cabinet cards. The late 1800's baseball players included are Charles Comiskey (1B St. Louis Browns) Tommy McCarthy (CF St. Louis Browns) Wilbert Robinson (C Philadelphia Athletics) Deacon White (1B Detroit Tigers) John Montgomery Ward (SS New York Gothams/Giants) John "Bid" McPhee (2B Cincinnati Red Stockings) and Roger Connor (1B New York Gothams/Giants).
For those unfamiliar with 1887-88 N173 cabinet cards they were premium redemptions from Old Judge cigarettes in the form of sepia-toned photos glued to a cardboard mount each measuring 6 1/4" by 4 1/4". The full color original postcard artwork here is done by Dawn Malick using oil to paint over an outline of the expanded cabinet cards on a canvas measuring 17" by 11". It depicts the player in his actual uniform colors from that time period. Ms. Malick has done similar artwork used in the making of the 19th Century Hall of Fame Artvue Postcard set (10 players) now sold in Cooperstown. The uniform colors were researched and provided by longtime hobbyist Mark Rucker and the images have been copyrighted by our consignor. Each of the artworks have been stretched and secured to a wooden backing and come ready for hanging. Images whether in a catalog or online do not do these lovely pieces justice.
