“Lady’s Secret” was an Eclipse Award-winning thoroughbred racemare that was listed in the “Top 100 U.S. Racehorses of the 20th Century.” She was bred by Robert H. Spreen at Lucas Farm in Oklahoma and then sold for $200000 to Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Klein. Her longtime trainer was U.S. Racing Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas. She was a small horse and weighed no more than about 900 pounds. Always a front runner she won 25 of her 45 races and had nine second-place finishes. As the daughter of Triple Crown winner Secretariat she dominated the fillies she raced against and was also competitive against males. This lot features five different awards Lady's Secret took home during the 1980's after some of her impressive victories at Belmont Raceway in Elmont New York.
The first trophy comes from the 1985 Ruffian Stakes a Grade II American thoroughbred horse race for fillies and mares ages three-years-old and up that’s run over a distance of one mile on a dirt track. Ridden by jockey Jorge Velasquez she won the race with a winning time of 1:47.40. The impressive two-handled sterling silver hallmarked trophy stands 15” tall and weighs almost five pounds (an astounding 2218 grams of sterling silver to be exact) with decorative berries and leaves throughout its raised design on the cup as well as the base. The front and back of the hefty trophy cup is not inscribed with anything specific about the race but you can clearly see in the last attached photo with the winning team.
The second piece is a serving tray (786g) with the sterling silver lion's symbol on the bottom that was also awarded to Lady’s Secret following her victory at the 1985 Ruffian Stakes. It measures 14 inches wide by 9.5” deep and three inches tall. The inscription on the side has worn off and its lone handle is broken on one side but can be repaired.
The third piece to this lot is a weighty six-inch tall gold-colored (probably brass) clock that was awarded to Lady’s Secret by the N.Y.R.A. following her victory at the 1986 The Maskette Stakes with a time of 1:33.60. The Swiss made clock which measures five inches wide and works fine is specially engraved on its base with the following text: “THE MASKETTE BELMONT 1986 Won by Eugene V. Klein’s Lady’s Secret.”
The fourth component consists of another sterling silver hallmarked tea pot that was awarded to Klein’s racing team following Lady Secret’s victory at the 1985 Beldame Stakes. Somewhat tarnished the bulky tea pot weighs over five pounds (2400g) measures 12 inches high by eight inches wide and includes the following engraving in its front: “New York Racing Association The Beldame Belmont 1985 Won by Eugene V. Klein’s Lady’s Secret.”
The fifth and final part of this lot is a single handled sterling silver hallmarked coffee pot that Lady’s Secret won after winning the 1986 Shuvee handicap at Belmont with a time of 1:41.80. It stands nine inches tall and weighs over two pounds (938g). Ridden to victory by jockey Pat Day Lady’s Secret’s prize which was produced by F. Gorevic & Son Inc. is engraved across the front with the following text: “New York racing Association The Shuvee BELMONT 1986 Won by Eugene V. Klein’s Lady’s Secret.”
