Here are five amazing early cabinet-style photographs from turn-of-the-century Swarthmore football images that offer a fascinating glimpse of what collegiate football entailed at a small private university more than 100 years ago. Photos are approximately 16-by-13 inches in image space and in four of the five instances expanded to approximately 16-by-20 inches with a heavy cardboard mat fairly typical of the period. Though the matting boards all suffer from varying degrees of damage and corner wear or tears the photographic images are not encroached by any of this. Two football portraits are simply stunning illustrating early football uniforms and equipment in incredible fashion; on one photo a player at the center is holding a football with "14-0" marked in white on the ball and on the second a ball held in a similar location has had something penned over and can't be distinguished. The track and field image includes an athlete holding a banner denoting the famed Penn Relays and a 1905 date while two of perhaps the most compelling and brilliant intensity images feature the lacrosse team leisurely posed in front of the ivy-covered walls of the day.
