Juan Manuel Fangio is one of the most accomplished drivers in motorsport history. The Argentine legend captured five Formula One World Drivers' Championships (1951, 1954, 1955, 1956, and 1957), driving for Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz, and Ferrari, a record that stood for nearly half a century. His winning percentage remains the highest in Formula One history.
This 1948 Figuritas Patria card is recognized as the earliest known trading card of Fangio, issued in his native Argentina before he made his move to European Grand Prix racing. At the time, Fangio was a rising star of Argentina's demanding long-distance road races, and this card captures him on the cusp of global fame. The card presents a sepia-toned portrait of a young Fangio set against a teal background. The reverse displays the bold "Figuritas Patria" brand name, with paper loss consistent with removal from an album.
PSA has authenticated and encapsulated the card as Authentic Altered (Cert. #164157758). Notably, this is the only example of the card to appear in the PSA Population Report, underscoring its extreme rarity. Early Argentine figuritas were printed on thin stock and typically pasted into albums, resulting in an exceptionally low survival rate.
Fangio's cards are highly coveted by motorsport collectors worldwide, and pre-championship issues are virtually unobtainable. This represents a remarkable opportunity to acquire the earliest card of one of the greatest racing drivers who ever lived, a true centerpiece for any Formula One or Argentine sports collection.
