The 1935 National Chicle Football set was the first major gum card issue dedicated to the National Football League, and its 36 cards remain among the most beloved of all vintage football issues. Each card combines colorful artwork with a playing tip from Eddie Casey, coach of the Boston Redskins and former Harvard coach. Card #15 features Ben Ciccone, center for the Pittsburgh Pirates, the franchise that would be renamed the Steelers in 1940. A product of Duquesne University, Ciccone was a member of Pittsburgh's earliest NFL teams, giving this card added appeal for Steelers collectors.

The front is one of the most distinctive images in the set, showing a close-up of a ruddy, red-haired Ciccone in a bold black and gold striped jersey, crouched over the ball and staring intently ahead. Teammates and coaches in matching colors appear in the background against a bright green field.

The reverse describes how the center position had evolved from a "big man who filled up as much space as possible" into "a vital spot on the offense and the key man in the secondary line of defense." Casey explains the concept of the "roving centre" and notes that good centers "like Ben Ciccone of the Pittsburgh Pirates, will make more tackles than any other player on the team." Biographical details list him as 24 years old, 5'11" and 190 pounds, from New Castle, Pennsylvania.

This example offers strong color and a sharp image, with corner and edge wear consistent with the grade. The reverse is clean and legible. An early Pittsburgh card with eye-catching artwork. Graded VG-EX 4 by PSA.
