“The Scooter” is captured on this scarce high-number issue from the classic 1955 Topps set, presented here in sharp PSA NM-MT 8 condition.

The 206-card 1955 Topps release was the company’s first set with a fully horizontal design. Its pairing of a portrait and an action image on each card made it one of the most attractive issues of the decade. Card #189 falls within the set’s high-number series, #161 through #210. Those cards shipped in the fall, when football cards were arriving in stores, so retailers ordered fewer and the print run was smaller. Rizzuto joins Clemente, Mays, Berra and Snider among the series’ marquee names, which makes high-grade examples especially tough.

The diminutive shortstop was the heart of the Yankees’ infield through the dynasty years. He won seven World Series titles and was named American League MVP in 1950. After his playing days he spent four decades in the Yankees broadcast booth, where his trademark “Holy cow!” made him a beloved voice to generations of fans. He was enshrined in Cooperstown in 1994.
