The 1958 WS-Verlag Fussball-Weltmeisterschaft #90 offers collectors a contemporary image of a 17-year-old Pelé at the very start of his legendary career. Issued in Germany during the 1958 FIFA World Cup in Sweden, the card depicts Brazil's quarterfinal match against Wales, the game in which Pelé scored his first World Cup goal, the lone strike in Brazil's 1-0 victory.
The black-and-white action photograph shows Pelé pressing toward the Welsh goal amid a packed stadium crowd. The German-language reverse, titled "Bild Nr. 90," identifies the scene: "Brazil — Wales. The 17-year-old Brazilian Pelé tries to reach the ball ahead of goalkeeper Kelsey." Wales goalkeeper Jack Kelsey would be beaten only once that afternoon, by the teenager who would go on to become the youngest player to score in a World Cup final just days later.
Pelé finished the 1958 tournament with six goals as Brazil claimed its first world championship, the first of three World Cup titles he would win in his career. Contemporary cards from the 1958 tournament picturing Pelé are among the earliest and most desirable cards of the soccer icon, and PSA identifies him by name on the label.
Graded GOOD 2 by PSA (Cert. #84025054), this example shows wear consistent with the grade, while the image remains clear and the reverse text fully legible.
A cornerstone card for any Pelé or World Cup collection, offered alongside the #77 Brazil–Soviet Union card from the same set in this auction. PSA GOOD 2.
