The 1972 Topps #49 Willie Mays is the final Topps base card of the "Say Hey Kid" in a Giants uniform, issued during the season in which he would return to New York as a member of the Mets. After more than two decades with the Giants franchise, from the Polo Grounds to Candlestick Park, Mays was traded to the Mets in May 1972, closing one of the most celebrated tenures any player has had with a single club.

The front features a smiling Mays in his Giants cap and home jersey, bat on his shoulder before a crowded ballpark, framed by the bold yellow and orange "Giants" design of the 1972 set. The reverse details his complete major and minor league batting record, including 646 career home runs and 3,178 hits through 1971, and notes his 1953 season spent in military service.

Mays finished his career with 660 home runs, 12 Gold Gloves, two MVP awards and 24 All-Star selections, and he was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1979 in his first year of eligibility.

Graded NM-MT 8 by PSA (Cert. #11579895), this example displays strong centering, bright color and sharp corners. The colorful borders of the 1972 design are especially unforgiving of wear, making high-grade examples of Mays' final Giants card challenging to locate.
