The 1973 Topps #50 Roberto Clemente holds a poignant place in the hobby as the final Topps card of the Pittsburgh Pirates legend. Released just months after Clemente lost his life on December 31, 1972, in a plane crash while delivering relief supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua, the card was issued as the baseball world mourned the loss of one of its greatest players and humanitarians.

The front features a dramatic action image of Clemente at the plate, his bat breaking through the frame as the catcher and umpire look on, set against the classic white-bordered 1973 design with Clemente's position flag and "Outfield" designation. The reverse displays his complete major and minor league batting record, concluding with exactly 3,000 career hits and a .317 lifetime average. A cartoon at the top of the back notes simply, "Roberto got his 3000th hit in 1972," a milestone that proved to be the final regular-season hit of his career.

Graded NM-MT 8 by PSA (Cert. #30208384), this example presents with strong centering, bright color and clean borders. The card's sharp corners and crisp image place it among the more desirable surviving copies of a card that has never been easy to find in high grade.

Clemente was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1973 through a special election that waived the customary waiting period. This card remains an essential piece of any Clemente, Pirates or vintage baseball collection. PSA NM-MT 8.
