The 1961 Topps set captures the game in the year of one of its most famous seasons, as Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle chased Babe Ruth’s single-season home run record. This complete 587-card set is a fine example of one of Topps’ most celebrated vintage issues, and three of its cards have been professionally graded by PSA.
The checklist reads like a roll call of Cooperstown. Mantle (#300), Maris (#2), Willie Mays (#150), Hank Aaron (#415), Roberto Clemente (#388), Sandy Koufax (#344) and Carl Yastrzemski (#287) anchor a lineup packed with Hall of Famers from the game’s golden era. The set also includes three key Hall of Fame rookie cards: Juan Marichal (#417), Ron Santo (#35) and Billy Williams (#141). Popular subsets add to the appeal, including the MVP series honoring past award winners and the World Series highlights.
Completing this set has long been a challenge, mostly because of the scarce high-numbered series. Cards #523 through #589 were printed in smaller quantities late in the production cycle, and they are notoriously hard to find today. The run is numbered to 589, but #587 and #588 were never issued, so 587 cards make up a full set. Assembled 1961 Topps sets are becoming harder to locate as collectors break them up for grading, which makes this complete run especially worth a look.
For the vintage collector, this is an iconic year in baseball history in one complete package. Please see photos for condition and for details on the PSA graded cards.
