Offered is the key rookie card of one of the greatest pure hitters of his generation: a 1967 Topps #569 Rod Carew Rookie, graded EX-MT 6 by PSA. Carew shares the "A. League Rookie Stars" card with Washington Senators outfielder Hank Allen. As part of the challenging high-number seventh series, the card is considerably scarcer than earlier issues from the set.
The obverse features side-by-side portraits beneath a bold red "A. League Rookie Stars" banner on a bright yellow field. Carew appears at left in his Minnesota Twins cap, with his facsimile signature and the "Rod Carew • 2B" nameplate below. The reverse provides minor league batting records for both players and notes that the 21-year-old second baseman "was battling Al Kaline for the batting leadership in the American League" in late May.
Carew made good on that early promise. He was named 1967 American League Rookie of the Year, captured seven batting titles, earned 18 consecutive All-Star selections and won the 1977 AL MVP after flirting with .400. He retired with 3,053 hits and entered the Hall of Fame on the first ballot in 1991.
This example presents with strong color, sharp focus and solid centering, and its corners and edges are consistent with the EX-MT 6 grade. The reverse is clean with bright card stock. It is an appealing example of a Hall of Famer's essential rookie card. Encapsulated by PSA (Cert. #85054762).
