LeRoy Neiman has long delighted sports fans with some of the most resplendent artistic interpretations the hobby has ever seen. Here again Neiman's masterful craft memorializes one of baseball's greatest talents with a rare ink composition this one picturing Mickey Mantle. Of course the artist is best known for his brilliantly colored and stunningly energetic portrayals but that impressionistic approach was abandoned for this endeavor in favor of a relatively austere line drawing fashioned in deft strokes of black and yellow ink. Mantle is pictured with his back to the viewer the athlete pin-striped in familiar Yankees regalia and bowing his head. Mantle's "7" -- essentially the focal point of the work -- is clearly visible.

Neiman has produced only a limited number of Mickey Mantle original works the most famous of which "Mantle at Bat" achieved $108000 when sold in June of 1997. Collectors are understandably on the look-out for the artist's personal tributes to the Yankees legend and they revel in the news upon learning that LeRoy Neiman -- one of the most successful painters of our time and the most celebrated of all sports artists -- has rendered a depiction of the National Pastimes hero. Neiman's expressive pencil signature (9) is found along the bottom edge of the paper sheets 11" x 14" visible area and black-inked captions in his hand read "June 11 ‹68 and Yankee Stadium. The magnificent drawing has been matted and framed to 18 x 21 overall dimensions. Full LOA from PSA DNA.
