Lee Trevino was one of the most colorful figures ever to compete on the PGA Tour. The Dallas Texas native won six major championships over the course of his career and is one of only four players to twice win the U.S. Open 1968 and 71; The Open Championship 1971 and 72; and the PGA Championship 1974 and 84. The only major that eluded him was the Masters. He is an icon for Mexican Americans and is often referred to as "Super Mex" an affectionate nickname given to him by other golfers. In the early 1980s Trevino was second on the PGA Tour's career money list behind only Jack Nicklaus. From 1968 to 1981 Trevino won at least one PGA Tour event a year a streak that spanned 14 seasons. This lot features a tournament-used 6 iron that Trevino played with from 1968 to 72 and donated to the special project on behalf of the Boys Club of Royal Oak Michigan. The non-descript 37 Faultless 6 iron shows ample tourney use and includes a well-worn faded burgundy grip that stretches a little more than 9.5 long. In a signed typed letter on his personalized letterhead (Lee Trevino Enterprises Inc.) that accompanied the donation dated Sept. 17 1976 Trevino wrote: Thank you for your efforts on behalf of the Boys Clubs of America. It is a very worthwhile organization. The #6 iron I sent you was used by me from 1968 until 1972. It isnt much to look at now after I ground and hacked on it! However it is authentic and I did put on a new grip. Hope it raises a lot of money for your fund.

Includes original letter that Trevino sent to the Boys' Club of Royal Oak as well as a signed black-and-white 8" x 10" photo showing Trevino holding up an iron. He signed it in black marker and added the inscription: Super Mex.

Includes Letter of Provenance from the Newport Sports Museum.
