From the estate collection of Barney Stein comes this baseball signed by Hall of Famer Walter Alston that is personally inscribed to the Brooklyn Dodgers’ longtime photographer. Alston singles are somewhat scarce in the hobby due to the longtime Dodgers skipper dying in 1984, just a year after his Cooperstown induction. In 1955, just his second year as manager, Walt forever earned a place in the hearts of the Dodger faithful by guiding ‘Dem Bums to their first and only World Series triumph in Brooklyn. From 1937 to ’57, Barney Stein captured it all with his camera and is now revered among the Mount Rushmore of vintage baseball photographers.

On a side panel, Alston has penned in blue, “To Barney, One of my first friends in Brooklyn. Walter Alston.” Stein’s 21-year tenure covering the Dodgers ended when the club moved to Los Angeles in 1958, and he received several going-away gifts like this ball from the many friends he had made along the way. The soiled and toned ONL (Warren Giles) baseball has some white scuff marks, showing its age and possible usage. The autograph and inscription are very legible in 6/10 strength. Includes a letter from Barney’s daughter and a full LOA from Beckett.
