Here is a rare and distinguished piece of 1982 FIFA World Cup history: a Scotland National Team jersey, bearing the tournament's official Spain 1982 embroidery, worn by striker Steve Archibald and preserved in the Oscar Bernardi Collection.
The Scots opened Group 6 play with a 5-2 victory over New Zealand in which Archibald scored the final goal. Their next opponent, Brazil, was unforgiving in a 4-1 thrashing at Estadio Benito Villamarín in Sevilla on June 18. Down 1-0 early, the Brazilians responded with four unanswered goals including one from Oscar Bernardi himself —the only World Cup goal of his career. After the match, the Brazilian center-back exchanged shirts with Archibald and it has been in Oscar's possession ever since.
Archibald played for the Scottish National Team from 1980 to '86, but his football career was better remembered on the club side with long, successful runs at Aberdeen, Tottenham, and FC Barcelona, scoring well over 100 goals from 1977 to '88.
The short-sleeve jersey made by Umbro comes in navy blue with white V-neck collar and white ribbed cuffs on the sleeve ends. The Umbro diamond logo patch is embroidered on the right chest across from the embroidered Scottish Football Association crest featuring a rampant lion within a shield in full color. Just below is "F.I.F.A. World Cup Spain 1982" embroidered in white. The reverse has white "18" numerals with Umbro diamond logos incorporated into the base of each digit — a signature detail of authentic Umbro player jerseys of this period. The shirt exhibits ample match use with fabric pilling and a worn out Umbro label inside the collar.
The Oscar Bernardi Collection
This shirt comes from the personal collection of José Oscar Bernardi, better known as Oscar, who played for the Brazil National Team from 1977 to 1986. Included is a letter of provenance signed by Oscar. Most jerseys in the collection were obtained directly through player swaps after competition. Others were acquired via gifts or trade with footballers in Oscar’s wide network of teammates and friends. At age 71, he still resides in Brazil and is ready for his collection to be appreciated by others in the hobby.
