The 1939 Baseball Centennial, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the "birth" of baseball, was a yearlong celebration highlighted by the dedication of the Baseball Hall of Fame on June 12th. The culmination of the day's festivities was an exhibition game played at Doubleday Field between an American and a National League team made up of players from all sixteen Major League clubs. Offered here are a rare program and ticket stub from that historic game.
Offered here is an official program issued for that very Baseball Centennial Celebration that was held at Doubleday field in Cooperstown New York from June 12, 1939. Issued on the same day as the Baseball Hall of Fame dedication, this 40 page program is loaded with articles, photos and a time table of the various events taking place during the day. The AL vs. NL exhibition capped off the festivities and featured players from all 16 Major League clubs. Eddie Collins and Honus Wagner were captains of their sides and scoresheets from both clubs are included inside the program. This program should not be confused with programs issued for other events and games held at Doubleday Field throughout the summer, all of which feature the same cover. The offered program was issued only on the day of the Hall of Fame dedication as noted by the interior scoresheets and itinerary. The program is 8.5x11" and has some light vertical folds and small tears and areas of surace paper loss on the back cover. Overall VG condition.
A ticket stub to the Cavalcade of Baseball that was also held at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown on June 12, 1939 is also included with this lot. The colorful stub displays a silhouette of ballplayers at play, an illustration of the Hall of Fame and a prominent image of Abner Doubleday (inventor of baseball). Ticket measures 5.5x2.75" and has some light creases and surface paper loss and adhesive residue on the reverse from it having been mounted in an album at one point in time. Overall VG condition.
