In 1910, former heavyweight champ James J. Jeffries came out of retirement with the specific intention of reclaiming the title from the Jack Johnson. Unfortunately, this wasnt an innocent case of an old fighter trying to relive his glory days, but calculated move by the White Jeffries to remove the title from the Black Johnson. Heralded as The Fight of the Century, the July 4, 1910, fight was held amidst heated racial tensions across the country. The 20,000 fans who turned out for the fight in Reno, Nevada watched in awe as Johnson manhandled the former champ, flooring him twice, the first time this happened in Jeffriess career. Jeffries corner threw in the towel after the 15th round, allegedly to prevent a Black man from recording a knockout of the former White champ. The photograph, credited on the front to Dana Photo, captures the huge mass of humanity that assembled to witness the Fight of the Century. Jeffries has squared off in a classic boxers defensive stance while Johnson lets his massive arms drop to his sides, as if to challenge the former champ to swing at him. This historically significant piece has been printed to its edges. There is deep, warm toning from age and some edge wear present, most notedly in the upper right corner which has a small piece of the corner missing. The reverse shows the residue from where it was once mounted in a scrapbook or matte and no stamping or notations are visible. This historic piece of boxing history has been encapsulated and graded a Type 1 by PSA.
