Johnny Unitas, a name synonymous with greatness in the world of football. For 18 seasons, Unitas graced the NFL with his exceptional skills, primarily as the quarterback for the Baltimore Colts. From 1956 to 1973, he left an indelible mark on the sport and is widely regarded as one of the greatest players to have ever played the game.Unitas' journey to football stardom was not without its hurdles. Initially drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 9th round, he faced an unfortunate setback when he was released before the season even began. Undeterred, Unitas scraped together enough gas money to attend a tryout with the Baltimore Colts the following year, and it was there that his legendary career truly began.Throughout his illustrious career, Unitas achieved numerous accolades and milestones. In July 10, 1972, he graced the cover of Sports Illustrated for only the second time while actively playing. This was a testament to the rarity of his appearances on the prestigious magazine's cover. The first time he was featured was back in October of 1959. Interestingly, even after retiring, Unitas continued to captivate the attention of the sports world, earning a spot on three more covers. The July 10, 1972 issue of Sports Illustrated featuring Unitas on the cover is a true collector's item. Graded CGC 8.5, it stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of this football icon. Only three copies have been graded higher, adding to its allure and value for enthusiasts and collectors alike.
