The only thing better than getting your signature inked to a Topps Chewing Gum Inc. contract to get your mug included on a baseball card would be signing that contract at a young enough age (in this case 19 years old) so that your mom has to sign right along with you to provide parent's consent. So that's three important signatures on this beauty when you consider that the Topps official who signed off on young Mr. Torre's contract was none other than Sy Berger the pioneering Topps official whose name is linked for posterity with nearly four decades of the company's colorful history. Margaret Torre provided her John Hancock at the top of this standard 10-by-15-inch Topps contract dated Aug. 25 1959 while her 19-year-old son provided an attractive 8/10 blue ballpoint autograph on the bottom just above Berger's signature as Topps' authorized agent en route to becoming a vice president and the most recognizable figure connected to the iconic baseball card. The document itself details how Torre would receive a check for the tidy sum of $5 with the understanding that he would eventually get $125 once he managed 31 consecutive days on a major league roster with the contract running for two years since the five years typed in the original contract was crossed out and "two" written in by hand. That happy moment presumably came in the second year 1961 when he spent virtually the full season as Milwaukee's promising young backstop. The first actual Topps card would come along one year later. The Topps contract is nicely matted beneath a 4-by-5-inch black-and-white photo showing Torre as a New York Met to which he added a nice 8/10 autograph as well. Not bad for an eventual Hall of Famer: two great autographs one with his full name plus signatures of Sy Berger and Torre's mom tossed in to sweeten the deal.
