When one thinks of the great American League centerfielders in the 1960’s, Mickey Mantle, Jimmy Piersall and Carl Yastrzemski come to mind. Yet, for five consecutive seasons, 1960 to 1964, it was Chicago’s Jim Landis who won the Gold Glove honors. The center fielder of the Go-Go White Sox was further honored when he was named the Pale Hose’s “Best All-Time Chicago Center Fielder” in 2000. This is the second of Jim Landis’s quintet of Rawlings Gold Glove Awards. 1961 was also a banner season at the plate for Landis as he set career-highs in batting average (.283), home runs (22), hits (151) and RBI (85). He also stole 19 bags and scored 87 times.
The lovely piece measures an impressive 16” wide and 15” tall, consisting of a gold-colored Rawlings glove and baseball with “1961” engraved into its surface. A wooden diamond with “RAWLINGS GOL GLOVE AWARD” is mounted behind the glove and an engraved plaque with “OF-JIM LANDIS THE SPORTING NEWS AMERICAN LEAGUE ALL-STAR FIELDING TEAM 1961” is mounted to the wood base. The award shows a little wear with some scuffs and abrasions from display and age. Compared to most examples we’ve come across, this Gold Glove is in outstanding condition. A hard-earned award from the best center fielder in White Sox history that comes directly from his personal estate collection. Landis passed away in October of 2017.
