This is the jersey worn by Jim Bouton during his seventh and last season with the Yankees. The pitcher’s effectiveness had declined due to overuse and he spent 1968 working out of the bullpen. 1968 was also the season sportswriter Leonard Shecter suggested Bouton write and publish a book documenting a season in the majors. It’s interesting to think of Bouton sitting in the bullpen in this very jersey jotting down his thoughts on a piece of scrap paper. The Yankees road grey flannel has “NEW YORK” arched across the front in navy blue felt. The Wilson size “42” label is sewn in the left from tale above a “Wilson 1968 Set 2” label. “Bouton” is chain stitched in navy on a grey name plate and sewn into the collar of the flannel. Bouton’s number “56” is sewn across the back in navy blue felt. The flannel shows good game use with no visible tears or major staining. Very light discoloring is found below Bouton’s “56” on the back. All seven buttons are intact and the stitching on the lettering remains tight. LOA from Jim Bouton.
