This January 31 1972 Bill Hayward Banquet of Champions program is autographed by legendary distance runner Steve Prefontaine and College Football Hall of Fame Nebraska Head Coach Bob Devaney. Both have inscribed their signatures "To Bob." Prefontaine has signed in perfect 9/10 darker black pen while Devaney has signed in 8/10 lighter black pen.

Steve Prefontaine was one most revered distance runners in track & field history certainly the most prestigious American in that category. The man with a mustache and flowing blonde hair known as "Pre" held the American record in seven distances stretching from the 2000 meters to the 10000 meters during his heyday in the early 1970's. A fiery and hyper youngster out of Coos Bay Oregon Prefontaine ran at the University of Oregon under the great Bill Bowerman and is the athlete most responsible for giving Eugene its nickname of Track Town USA. Bowerman also coached Phil Knight in the early 1960's and together they founded Blue Ribbon Sports which later became Nike. It was Bill Bowerman who crafted and designed the first models of Nike shoes using a waffle iron to mold the soles and Prefontaine was the first star athlete to wear the Nike brand in competition. "Pre" competed in the 5000 meters at the 1972 Summer Games in Munich but his ballsy front-running tactics cost him a medal. Still many consider the 4th place finish his most gutsy race as he took the lead and went for gold against Finnish star Lasse Virn two laps too early unable to hold form down the final stretch. On May 30 1975 "Pre" was killed tragically in an auto accident (believed to be alcohol-induced) near his home in Eugene Oregon at the age of 24.

Bob Devaney coached the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team to two straight national titles in 1971 and 1972 at the end of his 11-year tenure in Lincoln. His retired with a career record of 136-30-7 (at Wyoming and Nebraska) and is enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame.

The banquet program honoring long-time Oregon track coach Bill Hayward who gives the famous Hayward Field track at Oregon its name appears to be in perfect condition and is framed and matted to an overall size of 13 3/4" by 17." A super rare signature from the most famous American distance runner of all time.
