Long before he was the head coach of the 1980 Miracle on Ice U.S. Mens Olympic Hockey Team Herb Brooks was himself a standout player who won a high school state championship in 1955 for Johnson High School in St. Paul Minnesota before becoming a star player for the University of Minnesotas Golden Gophers. He was also a member of the 1960 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team but became the last player cut from the squad the week before the Olympic Games started. Three weeks later Brooks sat at home and watched the team he almost made win the gold medal. Instead of sulking in his pity Brooks used it as motivation during the rest of his career.

Offered here is Brooks actual wool hockey sweater worn during the 1960s as a member of the United States International squad. The red white and blue aged garment still displays superbly with no significant condition issues. Two-tiered blue on red tackle twill USA is diagonally stitched across the front while an A.H.A. U.S. tri-color patch is sewn just above the left breast area. Proper Cosby [size 46 tagging can be found in the interior and a two-tiered blue on red tackle twill 14 takes up the back of the jersey. His uniform number in blue can be found on either sleeve. This is truly a near perfect presentation from the talented player who would go on to become the iconic head coach of the 1980 U.S. Mens Hockey team that defeated the vaunted Russians on their way to winning the gold in Lake Placid New York 35 years ago. On the afternoon of August 11 2003 23 years after his greatest moment Brooks was killed in an auto accident in Lake Forest Minnesota. At the time of his death Brooks was serving as the Pittsburgh Penguins' Director of Player Personnel. Brooks was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 1990 the International Hockey Hall of Fame in 1999 and the Hockey Hall of Fame (posthumously) in 2006.

Includes Letter of Provenance from Herb's widow Patti Brooks. Originated from the Herb Brooks Estate Collection.
