Ineligible for varsity play due to Big Seven conference rules, 19-year-old Wilt the Stilt instead got his start on Forrest "Phog" Allen's frosh squad. He debuted in Kansas University's annual Varsity vs. Frosh Scrimmage on November 18, 1955, racking up 42 points and 29 boards in the first freshman victory in Jayhawks history.
Featured here is Wilt Chamberlain as the centerpiece of the 1956-57 Kansas varsity squad the following season. This Jayhawks original team photo represents his inaugural appearance with the varsity where he spent two years dominating college basketball like nobody before or since. As a sophomore, Chamberlain averaged 29.6 points and 18.9 rebounds per game, leading his team to the National Championship game where KU lost by one point to UNC. Coached by Dick Harp after Phog Allen retired the previous season, KU finished with a 24-3 record with just one other future NBA player on the roster: point guard Maurice King.
The 8" by 10" photo still remains in fine condition overall with a creased top left corner with along with some staple holes long the right side border. The reverse is stamped by Duke D'Ambra photo service of Lawrence, KS. Outstanding image quality with a super early, poignant shot of Wilt the Stilt at the beginning of his legend. Encapsulated Type 1 by PSA/DNA.
