The inaugural 1933 Major League Baseball All-Star Game played July 6 at Chicago's Comiskey Park featured what many consider the greatest assembly of baseball talent ever to take the field. 17 future Hall of Famers appeared in the game including Babe Ruth Lou Gehrig Frank Frisch Chuck Klein Chick Hafey Bill Terry Paul Waner Pie Traynor Gabby Hartnett and Carl Hubbell. Connie Mack and John McGraw served as managers for their respective league sides. Babe Ruth hit the first home run in All-Star Game history. Frisch provided the NL's offense with a two-run homer in the sixth inning but the pitching performance of Lefty Gomez and Babe Ruth's blast helped the American League take the first Midsummer Classic by a score of 4-2.
Featured here is a pairing of two incredibly rare mementos from this important day in sports history: a ticket stub and program/scorecard. Neither come in ideal condition but that is to be expected for an event that took place over 85 years ago. The light blue stub has been torn in half but still shows the $1.10 stamped price for a "Lower Deck Reserved" seat and features most of the general stadium map on the reverse. We chose not to get this one graded since it would rate no better than "Authentic"; still this is a feat in itself as only 28 stubs (and just 6 fulls) have ever been encapsulated by PSA and of those 16 are simply "Authentic" versions. Fulls are virtually extinct.
The accompanying program opens to reveal a scorecard for each team neither of which have been scored surrounded by some 30s era ads. There are several creases running horizontal to the front cover indicating that it was folded up at one point. Regardless the GD/VG condition is boosted by strong blue and red colors on the front and back. A tremendously tough pair of items to find individually let alone together in the hobby!
