This important PSA/DNA Type 1 represents the cruel reality of the pain and suffering Lou Gehrig was dealing with in 1939. Pictured here in his Yankees home uniform leaning against a wooden post in the dugout, the Iron Horse looks like a shell of his former self. Muscular detioraration brought on by ALS is apparent in his loose jersey and pants. Even the expression on Lou's face says it all -- a proud man mentally and physically ailing without any warning or explanation. Gehrig appeared in only eight games in April of 1939. His final game was April 30, 1939, at Yankee Stadium against the Senators. In June, he was officially diagnosed with the disease that would bear his name.Stamped on the reverse by International News Photos, this image was used multiple times by the press following Gehrig's death in 1941 as the date stamps and affixed slugs/captions attest. At some point, a small portion of the upper right was die cut for publication. Image clarity and condition are exceptional, regardless of the missing section. With a dark background, it displays like the original.DATE: 1939GENERATION: First (printed from original negative)ISSUER: International NewsSIZE: 6 x 7.5CONDITION: Mint (excluding die cut)AUTHENTICATION: PSA/DNA Type 1 LOA
