Known as the Oscar of sports awards and older than The Heisman the AAU Sullivan Award honors the outstanding amateur athlete in the United States. It has been presented annually by the AAU since 1930 as a salute to founder and past president of the Amateur Athletic Union and a pioneer in amateur sports James E. Sullivan. He was one of the AAUs founders in 1888 serving as its secretary from 1889 until 1906 when he was elected as president from 1906 to 1909. This is a perfect duplicate of the award thats given each year to a deserving amateur athlete. Past recipients of the award include: James Abbott Jean Benoit-Samuelson Bonnie Blair Mary Decker Paul Hamm Bruce Jenner Michael Johnson Rafer Johnson Peyton Manning Wilma Rudolph Frank Shorter Mark Spitz and Tim Tebow. The 17-pound 17 tall trophy shows an 11 athletic figure made of cast iron atop a 9 wide by 6 deep black base than includes an 8.5 wide by 1 high slab of marble. On one side of the base is a special plaque that touts James E. Sullivans major contributions to the world of amateur athletics and includes his years on earth: 1862 to 1914. A pair of gold medallions can be seen on either end of the base one showing a portrait of James E. Sullivan while the other shows the AAU insignia.Includes a Letter of Provenance from the Helms Athletic Foundation/LA84 Collection.
