In November of 1913, the International Boxing Union revoked Jack Johnson’s World Heavyweight Champion Title and declared the title vacant. This opened the opportunity for “Battling Jim” Johnson to step up and challenge Jack Johnson for the open title. Held on December 19, 1913, in Paris, France, this bout marked the very first time two black boxers fought for the world championship title. The fight ended in a ten-round draw and the title reverted to Jack Johnson. The crowd nearly rioted after the fight ended, with most spectators claiming that the two boxers were not trying their best to win. In fact, it was later revealed that Jack Johnson had injured his left arm in a wrestling match earlier in the week and that it had been broken by a blow in the third round of the fight.

This stunning poster was produced for this momentous prize fight. Both boxers are artfully rendered in their fighting stances, set against a vibrant orange-yellow background. The 64" x 48" original linen poster has border edge wear, though none that intrude into the artwork. There are vintage creases from storage and surface scuffs from age and storage. Regardless, the colors are vibrant, and this piece displays beautifully. Besides this poster’s incredible rarity, the visual appeal of its artwork is simply amazing.
