This historic photo was snapped just days before Jackie Robinson would be called up to the Brooklyn Dodgers, finally breaking the major league’s color barrier. This photograph, taken during a game between the Brooklyn Dodgers and their top farm team, the Montreal Royals, shows Robinson shaking hands with Leo Durocher who was supposed to be his first manager in the majors. Durocher would be suspended shortly after this photo was taken and Robinson’s first big league manager would in fact be Burt Shotton. Although this has been graded a Type III photo, it was printed and distributed during the period Robinson was shattering the color line. The photo has the caption slug printed along its bottom edge that identifies it as a Type III image. It shows toning from age with some creasing in its white border, most noticeably on the top right. The reverse is blank except for some pencil notations. An historically significant photo documenting the very start of Jackie Robinson’s tough but triumphant struggle to break baseball’s color line. The photograph measures 7 1/2” x 9 1/4” and has been encapsulated and graded a Type III by PSA.
