This rare and incredibly historic Type 1 photo captures the SS Ancon as it becomes the first ship to navigate the newly completed Panama Canal. Officially opened on August 15, 1914, the undertaking was one of the greatest engineering marvels in the history of the human race and revolutionized Atlantic to Pacific trade. Hundreds of Ancon passengers line the rails for the historic moment as the ship enters the Pedro Miguel Locks upon the canal’s Grand Opening. The Type 1 image measures 9 ½” x 7 ¼” and has been printed to its edges with the caption printed along the bottom edge. The reverse is blank and shows nice overall toning. Encapsulated Type 1 by PSA/DNA.
