On April 15 1947 in one of the most anticipated events in baseball history Jackie Robinson donned his Brooklyn Dodger uniform trotted out to the field against the Boston Braves and in one fell swoop obliterated the color line that had barred black players from playing major league baseball. Much has been written about the impact of that day and Jackie's role in everything from sports in America to the dawning of the civil rights era but suffice it say that no single baseball player in our history had as much impact on our country and in our culture than Jackie Robinson.
This Robinson single signed baseball is among the finest condition examples we have ever handled. The clean whitish Official National League (Warren C. Giles - NL president 1951-69) baseball is signed by the Brooklyn Dodger legend in 8/10 looking vintage blue ballpoint pen "Best wishes Jackie Robinson" in his customary position inside the arch of stitching on the side panel. Ball has Official Western League (O'Neal Hobbs) stamping next to the Giles stamping. A few small imperfections in the leather speckle the area of the inscription to little effect with a few more elsewhere on the ball. Overall it presents as a marvelous high-grade Jackie single the like of which are seldom seen in the marketplace.
