Honus Wagner has become a collecting icon through a combination of true greatness and mythical circumstance. Even to those unfamiliar with the history of our National Pastime his name has come to bear a connotation of importance. This official National League (Frick) baseball bears the Flying Dutchman's large fountain pen signature "J. Honus Wagner" placed across the side panel with his proud notation "Pirates 1939." The blue ink signature and inscription rate 7-8/10. The ball remains lightly toned with only minimal signs of handling. A notation on the panel left of the sweet spot reads. Cooperstown N.Y. 100 Years Centennial” in an unknown hand.
The highlight of the yearlong 1939 Baseball Centennial was the dedication of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown New York on June 12th. Over 11000 fans descended upon the sleepy village of Cooperstown on that day. The legendary Honus Wagner was front and center for those festivities as one of the members of the inaugural class of HOF inductees. Anyone serious about building the ultimate collection of single signed baseballs from the inaugural Hall of Fame inductees has found their cornerstone. In spite of his graciousness and relatively long life very few truly high-quality Wagner singles exist today.
