Back when the National Basketball Association was a rough-and-tumble outfit with blue-collar roots and lots of rowdy white guys with elbows the Harlem Globetrotters occasionally would be an attractive alternative for some of the great black talent of the era. With an alumni roster that included the likes of Wilt Chamberlain the Globetrotters were seemingly a more potent national television draw than some of the NBA counterparts and for millions of Americans whose only link to the professional game was the grainy black-and-white images on the Wide World of Sports the Globetrotters seemed like the greatest assemblage of talent in the world. If you dont believe us just ask the Washington Generals. Offered here are a couple of outstanding artifacts from the famous peripatetic franchise: a pair of warmup jackets one from the 1970s and another from the 1980s. The older jacket is 100 percent polyester with Kaz of California labeling at the back of the collar. It has the embroidered Globetrotters emblem (3 ½ inches in diameter) on the front with the distinctive red and yellow elastic piping down the sleeves and yellow elastic trim on the front pockets. The front zipper is in perfect working order at the front of the jacket and all elements show game usage but seem problem-free and without visible alteration or team repair. The 1980s blue jacket has Wilson Size 48 tagging at the collar and small flag tag beneath with some hand writing in blue marker. The same Globetrotter embroidered emblem appears at the front expanded now to 6 inches in diameter. Heavy elastic piping highlights of gold red and white adorn the sleeves and waist with yellow elastic trim on the pockets. The back of the shirt boasts the distinctive flap with five embroidered gold stars red and white alternating bars mimicking the US flag. Jacket has the working zipper down the front and like its older counterpart it is in spectacular condition showing game usage with some puckering of the front patch and elastic trim and problem-free and without visible indication of alteration or team repair.
