Seen on everything from tourist t-shirts to multimillion dollar Andy Warhol canvases, Marilyn Monroe’s likeness has become such a saturated image over the years that we can easily forget how truly beautiful and photogenic she was. Marilyn was perhaps at the height of her beauty and fame in 1955. After working her way up from calendar pinup model to ditzy blonde bit parts in comedies and finally a serious actress in major motion pictures, Marilyn transcended the title of film actress and became a national celebrity when she married baseball superstar Joe DiMaggio. The two became the premier “power couple” of the 1950s and the demand for Marilyn reached a fever pitch. In 1955 she starred in Billy Wilder’s hit romantic comedy, “The Seven Year Itch.” This is the film that featured the iconic subway grate scene where wind pushes Marilyn’s white skirt dangerously high up, showcasing her shapely legs. This photograph was taken on the set of “The Seven Year Itch” and depicts Marilyn playfully posing outside her dressing room. This over-size photo has been printed to the edge of the paper. The photo presents beautifully with very little wear. There is some very light staining on the lower left portion of the print and a surface scratch in the lower right area to be exact with minor edge wear. The reverse of the photo carries many handwritten and stamped production notes including a July 18, 1955 Life Magazine date stamp and an August 1, 1955 Time, Inc. stamp. A Frank LaGamma print stamp is also present. This photo has been graded a Type 1 by PSA and comes with an LOA.
