The late George Blanda won AFL Player of the Year honors in 1961. During that remarkable season he led the AFL in passing yards (3330) and touchdown passes (36). His 36 TD strikes in ‘61 were the most ever thrown by any NFL/AFL quarterback in a single season until that figure matched by Y.A. Tittle of the NFL New York Giants just two years later in 1963. Blanda's and Tittle's mark would remain the record until surpassed by Dan Marino's 48 touchdown passes in 1984.
This lot features Blanda’s 1961 Grantland Rice Trophy that he was awarded as the AFL’s Most Outstanding Player that season. A beautifully designed award the die-cast metal trophy cup with two-tiered wooden base measures 21” tall and weighs a total of 10 pounds. The specially engraved plaque on the bottom reads: “Presented to George Blanda of the Houston Oilers Whose Stellar Performances on the Gridiron earned Him recognition as the “OUTSTANDING PLAYERS OF 1961” in the American Football League.” The top section of the trophy has broken off and is missing.
