You could argue that there is no one more significant in the history of football, especially pro football, than Coach Paul Brown. He was an innovator and master tactician. From "The Cradle of Coaches" Miami of Ohio to Ohio State to the Cleveland Browns to the Cincinnati Bengals... to his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1971. He founded the Cleveland franchise after World War II, named the Browns... after him, of course! Later in his career Brown was a founding member of the Cincinnati Bengals franchise, serving as Coach and General Manager. The Bengals currently play in Paul Brown Stadium.
Fresh to the hobby, presented here is the rare 1969 Tresler Comet Bengals card of Paul Brown, signed by Brown at the time. His unique autograph became part of his brand, and PSA/DNA christened Brown's penmanship on this cardboard treasure with a perfect 10! Wow!
Provenance:
Our consignor Matt Bombeck collected sports autographs in the late 1960’s through the early 1970’s while living in the Dayton, Ohio area. Along with getting autographs at University of Dayton basketball games, Cincinnati Royals NBA games and Cincinnati Reds games, Matt was active mailing to players during these years, including their sports cards and index cards to be signed and returned in stamped self-addressed envelopes. While Matt quit collecting in the early 1970’s, he always kept his collection nearby, neatly preserved in sheets and binders, although sometimes packed away for long periods of time. Like many during the “shelter in place” periods of 2020, Matt rediscovered his collection, and ultimately decided it was time to give his autographed treasures a second life, so they are proudly presented here by SCP Auctions.
