Presented here is a unique Fred Snodgrass signed letter recounting events of the final game of the 1912 World Series, his Giants against the Boston Red Sox. The man who spent decades of his life haunted by his crucial error in the 1912 World Series attempts to set the record straight in this remarkable play-by-play of the decisive eighth game (not a typo).
"I did drop a fly ball. There's no doubt about that," he begins. Later, he addresses the error directly: "Murray called for it first, but as center fielder I had preference over left and right, so there'd never be a collision. I yelled that I'd take it and waved Murray off, and--well--I dropped the darn thing." He closes, "I did drop that fly ball, and that did put what turned out to be the tying run on base, but that's a long way from 'losing a World Series.' However, the facts don't seem to matter."
The close of the letter includes Snodgrass' signature is in period black fountain pen and grades a 9/10. The two typed pages exhibit original mailing folds, but is otherwise fexcellent.
Mr. Snodgrass passed away at age 86 in 1974. Authentication from PSA/DNA and JSA.
