This fine TYPE I candid close-up of Martin Luther King, Jr. carries the date stamp of December 30, 1965. That year had been a milestone for Dr. King and the Civil Rights Movement. The year began with the first Selma to Montgomery March to bring attention to the voting rights movement in Alabama. Police and White supremacist protestors attacked the peaceful marchers, drawing worldwide attention to the Civil Rights Movement. Though Dr. King was not present, he worked with the Johnson administration to stop any prosecution of the peaceful marchers. MLK led the second Selma to Montgomery March in March which culminated with his famous “how Long, Not Long” speech on the steps of the State Capitol. As successful this second march and speech was, this was barely the half-way mark on the timeline of the movement. This portrait of Dr. King shows one of the most influential figures of the 20th Century at a moment of rest, looking towards the long, hard road he and the Civil Rights Movement had yet to tread. The Type 1 image has all four borders. The reverse of the photo has a DEC 28 1965 date stamp and “M.L. KING” hand written in pencil. Encapsulated Type 1 by PSA/DNA.
