The August 28, 1963 “March on Washington” is one of the cornerstones of the Civil Rights Era. The event culminated with Dr. Martin Luther King’s epochal “I Have a Dream” speech delivered from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. In seventeen impassioned minutes, Dr. King’s speech called for economic equality, civil rights, and an end to racism in the United States. Broadcast over both television and radio, “I Have a Dream” became the defining moment of the civil rights movement. This photograph captures King on the podium in the process of delivering one of the most seminal speeches in American history. Caught in mid-sentence, Dr. King gazes beyond the bank of microphones before him and into the sea of over 200,000 who turned out that day to march for civil rights. This beautifully evocative action shot documents the pivotal moment Dr. Martin Luther King and the Civil Rights Movement became known to all Americans.

The back of the photo has the UPI stamping along with handwritten newspaper archival notations. The original caption slug is still affixed, giving contemporary commentary on the image. The 13.25” by 10” photo shows light overall toning from age with minimal edge wear. There are some creases in the photo only when angled in certain ways most noticeably on the top right and top left corners – however, none of these blemishes detract from the historical moment it documents. This iconic photo has been used as the center piece of many editorial publications and main photo to represent one of the most historical days in American history.  We have added different links to show some examples of this. This photo has been encapsulated and graded a Type 1 Authentic by PSA/DNA. An Extremely rare piece of history of the most important leader of the civil rights movement. Extremely rare photo of the most important civil rights leader during his most iconic and important speeches of the movement.
