Color Type 1 on-court NBA photos from the 1960s are extremely rare, but finding one depicting Bill Russell, one of the greatest players of the era, is fantastically tough. In fact, there are currently only 3 Bill Russell color Type 1s authenticated by PSA – and this is by far the most visually appealing. What makes this already exceptional example even more significant is that it was taken by famed sports photographer Darryl Norenberg. The Type 1 photo captures Russell as he leaps skyward, ball in hand, towards the basket. The vintage Kodachrome color really makes this tremendous action shot stand out, with the brilliant green of Russell’s Celtics uniform pop against the dark background of the old LA Memorial Sports Arena. The Type 1 photo measures 8” x 10” and has been printed to its edges. The reverse of the photo has Darryl Norenberg’s vintage credit stamp beneath a more modern address label of the photographer.
