This elegant pocket watch made of 14-karat gold was presented to pitcher Bob Shawkey of the 1913 World Series champion Philadelphia Athletics. The back of the case features an impressed floral wreath surrounding the text “1913 World’s Champions,” and it opens to reveal the maker’s mark along with the recipient’s name, “Robert Shawkey.” Manufacturer Howard Watch Co. of Boston added the “14K” hallmark inside the casing.

Shawkey was a 22-year-old rookie in 1913, joining future Hall of Famers Eddie Plank and Herb Pennock on a formidable Philadelphia roster that flourished under the leadership of Connie Mack. He started 15 games in his 18 appearances that season and had a 6-5 record with a terrific 2.34 ERA. Such a stellar debut campaign in the majors secured him a regular starting role the following season. His career continued to thrive in later years, and he is best remembered for his time with the New York Yankees during their dominant run of the 1920's.

The 1913 World Series once again brought together the Athletics and New York Giants, who had previously met for the title in 1905 and 1911, with each club claiming one championship. Anticipated as one of the most hotly contested Fall Classics since the event’s inception in 1903, Mack's A’s defeated John McGraw's Giants in five games to win the decisive rubber match.

The watch remains in fine overall condition with light exterior wear. It ticks when wound, though some fine tuning will likely be needed to restore it to full working order. A previous auction listing in 2014 noted that the front casing was replaced at some point.
