In every locker room throughout the NFL there is a sign that warns players about gambling. We have one of those original signs that hung in the Redskins locker room in the early 1970s when George Allen was the head coach of the football team. The measures 24.5" x 19" (made of heavy cardboard poster paper) and has been framed to an overall size of 29" x 23.5". This heavy cardboard stock sign was originally part of the Duke Hott Collection (the most extensive privately held football memorabilia collection that the hobby has ever seen); that was auctioned off by Mastro Auctions in 2005. Duke had reportedly obtained this directly from George Allen. We've never seen another one like it. To this day, the verbiage hasn't changed on the signs, just the commissioner.
It reads: "N O T I C E To National Football League Personnel Bribes and Gambling Among the types of conduct detrimental to the NFL and professional football that call for serious penalties are the following: 1. Accepting a bribe or agreeing to throw or fix a game or illegally influence its outcome; 2. Failing to promptly report any bribe offer or any attempt to throw or fix a game or to illegally influence its outcome; 3. Betting on any NFL game; 4. Associating with gamblers or with gambling activities in a manner tending to bring discredit to the NFL. Any such conduct may result in severe penalties, up to and including a fine and/or suspension from the NFL for life. PETE ROZELLE Commissioner"
