Rogers Hornsby was perhaps the purest right-handed hitter of all time. In a career that spanned five decades as both a player and manager, “Rajah” ate, slept, and dreamed of hitting. It is said he would not read a newspaper or go to the movies for fear of weakening his eyesight. The 2-time NL MVP won seven batting crowns and twice won the Triple Crown, retiring with a staggering .358 career batting average — second only to Ty Cobb. This Type 1 photo captures Hornsby during his days with the St. Louis Cardinals, circa 1920. The image typifies baseball in the early 20s, from the wooden grandstands to Hornsby’s glove tucked into his back pocket. The photo is not credited, but the composition, pose, and Hornsby’s road uniform suggest the possibility that legendary NYC-based baseball photographer Charles M. Conlon took it. The Type 1 photo has been printed to its edge. There is a file copy stamp embossed into the paper, and the edges appear to be hand-trimmed. The reverse has the Underwood & Underwood credit stamp and various handwritten notations. The photo has been encapsulated by PSA and graded a Type 1 Authentic.
