Don Mattingly (nicknamed "Donnie Baseball" and "The Hit Man") enjoyed a brilliant career as the perennial Gold Glove Award winning, All-Star first baseman for the New York from 1982-1995. The Yankees retired his number 23 and dedicated his plaque for Monument Park at Yankee Stadium on August 31, 1997. The plaque poignantly summarizes his stature in the Bronx, calling him "A humble man of grace and dignity, a captain who led by example, proud of the Pinstripe tradition and dedicated to the pursuit of excellence, a Yankee forever." Offered here is Mattingly’s Louisville Slugger professional model T141 game bat. The bat shows moderate use including ball marks, rack marks and grain separation from contact. Remnants of pine tar appear on the handle and Mattingly has added his signature to the barrel in black sharpie. Mattingly’s accompanying Yankees size 7 ¼ New Era professional model cap dates from 1992. It shows solid wear throughout including interior and exterior soiling and sweat stains on the interior band. Mattingly’s number “25” is written on the underside of the bill and he has signed it there as well along with his notation “1992”. Both of these items were obtained directly from Mattingly by our consignor, who is his close personal friend. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
