In the fifth game of the 1956 World Series after retiring the Brooklyn Dodgers in order for the seventh consecutive inning Don Larsen was smoking a cigarette in the dugout when he said to Mickey Mantle “Look at the scoreboard Mick. Wouldn’t it be something? Two more innings to go.”
It certainly was something. Two innings later the New York Yankees right-hander had completed his masterpiece. In achieving what is recalled today as one of the greatest individual feats in baseball history an otherwise average pitcher earned immortality.
Presented here is Don Larsen's "Most Memorable Moment" Trophy honoring his perfect game vs the Brooklyn Dodgers on October 8 1956. This prestigious award sponsored by Baseball Magazine and Major League Baseball was issued in 1976. Other recipients at the time included Hank Aaron (715th home run) and Joe DiMaggio (56 game hitting streak). The unique ultramodern design of the award comprises a silver-colored baseball attached to a flowing sculptural white metal piece which in turn rests on a polished black base. The front reads "Don Larsen’s perfect game versus the Brooklyn Dodgers October 8 196” in raised silver letters beneath the Major League Baseball logo. There is some minor tarnishing to the baseball and two areas of minor chipping on the base; otherwise the trophy is in near mint condition. The trophy weighs approx. 22 lbs and stands 12” tall. This incredibly prestigious award from Larsen's personal collection includes a Larsen signed media kit folder from the presentation as well as a photo of Larsen receiving it.
