Even when he retired from playing professional baseball in 1969 Los Angeles Dodgers great Don Drysdale was never too far from the game he loved. This lot features five different coach's baseball caps Drysdale wore (four with the Dodgers one with the White Sox) during his spring training coaching duties with the clubs. The versatile Drysdale served as a White Sox broadcaster from 1982-87 and would occasionally help out with coaching duties during the team's Spring Training period. He also worked with young pitchers quite often at the Dodgers training facility in Vero Beach Florida. All caps offered here show sweat staining on bill and/or sweatbands with stretching and wear. The White Sox cap has #53 marked in black on the bill. Based on the presence of the leather sweatbands and the New Era tagging these were all likely worn during Grapefruit League games and practices from the early-to-mid-1980s. Research indicates that New Era tagging was essentially the same until 1983 when they changed the verbiage from "100% Wool Fabric" to "Perspiration Proof" and added the Official Licensee of MLB flag tag. One of the Dodgers' caps has the old tagging. The others all have circa 1985-87 tagging. A fun collection of early-to-mid 1980's MLB coach's caps worn by the late great Don Drysdale.
